Asilah

Is one of the most beautiful old cities of Morocco, situated in the cliffs to the north of the country and facing the Atlantic Ocean. The tranquil atmosphere with the traditional blue-and-white painted houses impresses anyone who enters its gates. Asilah is a symbolic national port with a population of about 25,000 people, and is completely surrounded by strong Portuguese walls which date back to the fifteenth century, bringing out the European past of the city. It is 42 km south-east of the city of Tangiers, to which it is connected by rail and a highway. The city is at its best when visited in the summer, because winters can be unpleasant particularly if one is close to the sea. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean results in more rainfall than in the other areas.
